Casual Outfits for Newborn Photos

One of the biggest shifts we’ve seen in newborn photography is the move away from overly dressy outfits and toward relaxed, lived-in clothing that still feels elevated and intentional. The goal isn’t to look perfectly styled it’s to look comfortable, connected, and like yourself on your best day at home.

For moms especially, comfort matters. Casual style dresses are often feel the most comfortable for new moms to wear, but if you really want to go for that casual look there are plenty of other clothing options! In those early postpartum weeks, choosing fabrics and silhouettes that feel soft and forgiving can make such a difference in both confidence and movement during your session.

  • Lightweight linen button-ups
  • flowy chiffon blouses
  • fine knit oversized sweaters

Just to name a few, those photograph beautifully because they skim over the body without clinging. These materials create softness and texture while naturally camouflaging a postpartum belly in a way that still feels stylish and flattering, never frumpy.

Instead of tight or structured pieces, think relaxed draping, breathable fabrics, and subtle texture that can feel effortless while still photographing beautifully.

For dads and siblings, casual doesn’t have to mean sloppy!

  1. Soft henleys
  2. knit tees
  3. textured cotton pieces
  4. crochet matching sets for babies and toddlers
  5.  relaxed neutral layers

All help create that in-home feel without looking like everyone just rolled out of bed. The key is choosing basics with texture and coordination rather than graphic tees, athletic wear, or overly stiff formal clothing. Sometimes mom wants the kids to look a little more dressy while she and dad are wearing intentional basics but still elevated.

When everyone feels comfortable, the photos naturally feel more genuine and that relaxed connection is what makes indoor newborn sessions feel timeless.

When it comes to what the actual newborn will wear, simple is almost always best. The goal is to highlight how tiny and brand new your baby is, not hide them under bulky outfits or distracting details. Soft textures, neutral tones, and properly fitted clothing help keep the focus on all of those sweet newborn features you never want to forget.

There are three outfit options that consistently photograph beautifully during newborn sessions:

  1. A swaddle is one of the most timeless newborn photo options. It keeps baby cozy, snug, and comfortable while also helping create those sleepy, curled-up poses. A tightly wrapped swaddle allows you to fully see baby’s tiny face and features without extra fabric overwhelming them. Soft muslin, stretchy knit, or gauzy organic fabrics photograph especially well.
  2. A simple fitted onesie or fitted newborn set is perfect for a more casual, lifestyle feel. The key word is fitted — avoid oversized sleepers that bunch up or swallow the baby entirely.
  3. Small knit, crochet or gauze rompers add beautiful texture and softness to newborn photos while still showing those tiny newborn details everyone loves. Little arms, tiny feet, neck rolls, and delicate fingers are part of what make newborn images feel so emotional and memorable.

No matter which option you choose, keeping outfits simple, soft, and well-fitted helps create timeless newborn images that will still feel beautiful years from now.
